First Light, Still – Scotland’s Coast

Passing Cloud by Joe Cornish

Heads of the Grocke

North Shetland Sunset

We’re continuing Joe’s “First Light, Still” continues on with a series of pictures from Scotland’s Coast. As you can imagine, Joe took many more pictures than were included in the book and we’re talking about two of them here. We’re also featuring what must be one of Joe’s most well known and creative pictures and discussing a little bit about how it came about. Suffice it to say the Boy Scount motto “Be prepared” is not just for little boys..

    Hello,

I really like this magazine. Looking over the shoulders of Joe Cornish is very instructive.
I am wondering if it is possible to make the saturation of the video contents the same as what you probably see at the screen will making the video. Looking up the passing cloud picture on Joe’s website showed a picture with a higher saturation, which looks nice.

All the best and I hope this magazine formula works out.

  2. The photo of Tràigh Eais on Barra is one of my favourite images from ‘Scotland’s Coast’. In his notes in the book, Joe alludes to the fact that the conditions came together quite suddenly. Very interesting indeed to hear the story in more detail.

A fascinating presentation throughout, in fact. Really enjoying the magazine so far!

I enjoyed this video. Passing cloud is one of my favourite photographs.
Rather amused with the rule of thirds comment. You wouldn’t go very far in most camera clubs Joe/Tim… hahaha!

I know there has only been 2 issues thus far, but it would be great to see videos concerning exposure technique and how it shapes and impacts the visualising of your final image. Everyone in landscape should know how to meter, and use filters, but it may be beneficial to explain how under or over exposing , and the use of toning a sky etc.. help better construct an image, and better showcase the sense of place, and the emotional element from the photographer. We don’t always photograph exactly what we see…

Also, the intimate landscape shouldn’t be forgotten, as I know you both, as do many, enjoy capturing the details in the landscape.

Be nice to see some video out in the field.. maybe capturing either of you taking an image out in the landscape?

Im enjoying it thus far guys.

To have a private audience with Joe in these videos is excellent. I learn so much about his approach to colour, light and composition from listening to his commentary. I have also picked up some clever little tricks and techniques in Photoshop from watching him work.

In this video, like just about everyone I guess, I love his Passing Cloud image – close to photographic perfection in my eyes. (infinitely better than ‘Moonrise Over Hernandez’ ! :) ) and I was intrigued and amazed by what he was able to achieve from the last image discussed – that is a real eye opener.

Thank you, gentlemen, for such a valuable resource.

Really enjoying the format of these video’s, keep the good work up.

It was great to see Joe work on that last picture, North Shetland Sunset with just a few minor adjustments.
