Location Guide – Castle Crag, Cumbria

Castle Crag is one of the highlights of what Wainwright called “the loveliest square mile in the Lake District” and when I got together with a group of photographers at the end of January we were treated to a great display of why he thought so. We stayed in small self catering cottage in Manesty on the outskirts of Grange which was a great base to explore the bottom of Derwent Water and on our last day, to walk up to Manesty and through to Castle Crag itself, exploring the small quarry on top and the views over Rosthwaite and Longthwaite.

Wow, love the pano stuff (yay for Mac/Safari!). Next time we’re up that way, I’ll definitely try and get up there for some shots.

  2. ooh i am going to the lake district in September, will have to make this one of my spots to visit.

  3. Great use of the pano feature… crisp, clear and very fast on Mac…

  4. Yes it’s an interesting place and surprisingly not very far up. Mind you, when we went up I didn’t expect to see the graveyard type quarry area, certainly a surreal place and not somewhere you would like to camp, I’m sure! Anyway great to see the quick time VR stuff, gives a really good memory of the place! (We should have done a group shot to mark the weekend (o: )

    Awesome pano VR business.

Heading up to the Lakes for two weeks in May. This is definitely on the list for a visit!

Definately on the list of places to go. I agree excellent directions and pano. Thanks Tim

  7. It’s (at least) an equally good walk from Rosthwaite where there’s also car parking and the walk takes you past a set of stepping stones and a pretty decent stone bridge. As you go up to the crag from this side, you get a lot more views back up Borrowdale towards Honister (I think I saw Tim say elsewhere that he liked this view).

  8. By the way, the graphite seam was a couple of miles away, just above Seatoller. It became valuable for moulds for musket balls, and only when that use had ended was it used for pencils. And as I sit here in Rosthwaite, after 2 walks up to the crag in 3 days, I still think it’s the better starting point.
