First Light – Joe Cornish, Summer Walks

Joe Cornish is back with another First Light review of three photographs in that usual order, one well known, one not so well known and one that didn’t quite work. This time Joe is looking at photos taken on his summer sojourns from his house near Stokesley in North Yorkshire.

The best video yet for me but I might be biased as I also live locally to all these locations and the last image is perhaps my favourite of all Joe’s photographs, so there is a very personal connection which makes it difficult to be subjective. Coincidentally I’ve also visited the gate 3 times this winter and have been working on a composition facing the other direction but have yet to capture it in the right light…

I find it fascinating hearing Joe (or any other inspirational photographer) talking candidly about their images, you get so much more than you ever can from a heavily edited written article. Totally captivating, looking forward to the next issue :-)

The “First Light” videos are always both a highlight and a delight. Composition is always my biggest struggle and I find these conversations a real inspiration. So both “well done” and “thanks”!

As an aside…I thought the “bad” picture was beautiful. Oh for the day when I can consider than an image that didn’t really work!

I’m interested to hear that this image was made on Velvia, when it JC First Light book it’s noted as Provia, 1sec @ f/22? Is this an error in the book?

  4. Great website and great interview……

  5. I visited the Kildale location ( the sunset image )several times before I was aware that Joe had made this image there. What Joe does not say in his interview is that the foreground area is littered with boulders and is very uneven making a very complex landscape. Part of Joe’s great skill was to simplify this so that there is just the one bolder, the fractured tree and slab that naturally combine with the sun to make a compelling image.

  6. A great series by Joe here, providing a great insight in to his work. Enjoying Landscapes GB very much, well done Tim and Joe.
