    Hi Tim

So the first issue is all done and dusted!! I just wanted to say that I personally feel this fills massive gap in the current ‘magazine’ market, either printed or electronic. The mixture of video and written articles is really nice, hearing Joe Cornish pick faults in his own work is priceless – the man is human after all !! Also you can tell that content is genuine and spoken about in a passionate manor.

I realise that this was only the first but my only minor concern would be regarding the quantity of features. I’m not talking about dozen’s of articles per issue but maybe just a couple more, just a minor point. From a technical point of view I had no problems running the site in either Safari or Chrome.

I’m looking forward to seeing the next few issues.

    All the best.
    Paul

    • Hi Paul, I’m going to be adding some shorter articles as well as these, for instance I’d like to build up a photographer directory with a short portfolio and profile plus trying to start a series of critiques of subscribers work. On top of this there will be a general ‘editors review’ of the best of the web, a one stop shop with a list of what’s been found that could be of interest to the landscape photographer. Our approach on the tone of the content was to try and make it as honest as possible – I’m not a huge fan of trying to polish things too much and so you won’t get lots of glitz and backing tracks here :-) (although I was thinking about a make up artist next time.. my hair could do with a bit of a lift too… )

Hello Tim, excellent start, I really enjoyed it and I hope it will go from strength to strength. As I only discovered it by accident though, I wondered how widely you’ve managed to advertise this?

Secondly, my suggestion would be that you somehow include or review those books of landscape photography that are published regionally as those of us outside those regions never get to see them or even hear about them.

Finally, when are you going to open subscriptions, as you did mention the 24th?

    Best wishes,

    Neville Stanikk

  3. Hi Tim,

Great stuff so far! Just a suggestion, could there be a feature on printing. I believe Joe has been printing his own work for a while now and it would be great to see how he prepares an image for print.

    Regards,

    Michael.

    • Absolutely – it’s something of an art form and also something that Joe is particularly focussed on. Thanks for the suggestion.

    Hi Tim

I’m enjoying the “mag” immensely. It’s just what I was looking for, having grown tired of the repetitive cycle of shoot spring / shoot summer / shoot autumn / shoot winter articles on the news stands, and the excessive proportion of equipment-based articles in most magazines.

The review of different films is one I’m looking forward to. Are there any plans to do an article on scanning film ? I’d be interested to see what techniques the experts are using to get the best from their transparencies or negs at scanning time. For myself I’m using 6*7 film and an Epson V700; an article using this type of just-about-affordable-for-mere-mortals scanner would be more relevant than one using a drum scanner.

    Hello Tim,

Can I just complement you on the start the this endeavour has managed to make. As a fellow web person, good stuff.

Might I suggest that you should have a look at integrating a ‘great british landscapes’ Flickr group into the mix in some manner. Use it as a vehicle to attract subscribers, it is after all a very large group of photography enthusiasts… And with this being a web rather than print publication, they could easily become subscribers.

  6. I may be completely dense, but I can’t work this out at all:

“Don’t forget that if you go to your ‘account’ page (top right link) and then ‘membership details’, you can access a secure RSS feed that includes all of the paid for content!”

  7. I am acutely aware of my own IT limitations so I greatly appreciate how much back office effort is required to create, establish & operate a website such as this. The content is refreshing, thoughtfull, thorough. The technical insight is also informative but not so technical, it appeals only to technicians. And the format has the clarity to broadcast the content structure making navigation child proof easy. As will all editorial content, prospective contributors ideally have some inisght to the content direction of the publication. This is all but impossible to get from traditional print media. The consequence is that much fine editorial content is never printed because it doesn’t fit with the weekly/monthly theme or satisfy the page layout or indeed the unpredictable whims of the copy editor. Of course, roadmapping beyond the immediate time horizon demands some rigidity, not necessarily desireable for a start up magazine perhaps but useful nevertheless for anyone with the capacity to offer suitable content. What consideration might there be then in this regard?

On specific image content, I find it rare then even the finest landscape photographers provide sufficient copy to accompany their work beyond the normal transcripts that describe the physical & mental aspect of image acquisition. This in itself is often interesting. Each has his or her own approach so understanding another person’s perspective can be useful, intriguing even. Specifically, many images initiate a range of human emotional responses, that the viewer feels but occasionally unable to articulate. Proving some insight & explanation into these responses offers an additional level of understanding about why we take landscapes in the first place. After all, if the audience’s response in indifferent to any form of art, we would be much poorer indeed. And I don’t mean financially. Unable in this format to give specific examples, I am happy to forward some content with accompanying images that will visually demonstrate my thinking. And of course would be happy to provide some more extensive copy if desired.

    All the best,

    Graham Harris Graham

  8. Just a suggestion have look at Bruce Percy photographs may be a good photographer to interview .

  9. haimesa

I’d love to read the Jan Tove interview, if he agreed to it in the end. Also some scanning advice: given the coverage of film (which I totally and unreservedly applaud) it seems daft not to have some advice on scanning.

The other thing is: colour. Given that almost all of the photography here is colour, perhaps an article about the colour response of various films and, for digital folk, some advice on how to manipulate the colour palettes for various conditions.

Other than that:I absolutely love this magazine, thank you for giving us all such a treat.

  10. Tim,
I’ve been following the magazine since issue one as a free subscriber. it has been getting better and better and I have now purchased a subscription. I have to say it is the best content available anywhere for £2 – £3. I hope it goes from strength to strength.

This magazine has definitely come of age, so many congratulations on your 21st edition Tim. An awful lot of hard work must have been involved to get this far with your brave publishing venture.
Personally, you have given me an immense amount of pleasure and passed on so much useful knowledge.
I just wanted to send you a very big thank you!

    Dear Tim.

After following Great British Landscapes for a while
I finally registered a free membership today.
I cannot see any difference from being a casual reader,
but that does not make it less interesting or inspiring.
Must admit though, that I did believe that my free subscription would let me see the video in the latest With Landscape In Mind article :-)

GBL has eventually become one of the on-line magazines that I find of highest value to me as a landscape photographer, even though I have never put my foot on British land, as of yet. I have missed the presence of an interactive European landscape photography magazine with high quality content like GBL and it was with great joy that I discovered your magazine, Tim!
I find your own personal work and GBL a true source of inspiration and quality information. Thank you very much.

    Best Wishes

    Hey Tim

Do you do interviews with photo companies? At http://www.fotoviva.co.uk we are a team of photographers, some pros and some wannabees! We have a nice collection of landscape images so wondered if you could give us more exposure (excuse the pun!)?
