I really enjoyed reading Robert Poole’s article on alternative print processes in this issue. I’ve dabbled a little bit in this myself after building a UV exposure lamp and can attest to the magic of producing prints not only away from a digital printer but also away from a traditional darkroom! In my case, I played around with platinum printing a bit but also Van Dyke printing and cyanotype. I even made a few shadowgram t-shirts for my nieces from collected plants near our house.
My favourite was definitely the platinum and Van Dyke prints and especially the Van Dyke as they were so accessible (cheap materials and an excellent, bold result). I used my inkjet printer to make a few negatives and added to the old world look by using photographs taken with an old Tessar lens on my 5x4 camera (I’m sure a lens baby would produce similar, swirly results).
The final result was quite pleasing, and Robert’s article has made me dig out the image for this editorial. I shall be trying again in the near future as I recently purchased a Peizography printer, an Epson printer along with a set of carbon based inks that can produce very high quality results on acetate for use in contact printing. More about that later!
I should add a quick call for submissions to the Natural Landscape Photography Awards as there is less than 24 hours left before entries close.

The Alternative ‘Movement’
Silver-based film and traditional darkroom printing are making a healthy comeback in art colleges and among amateurs. Whether silver-gelatin is really ‘alternative’ photography is a moot point. more

The natural world can offer us so much in the way of living a deeper and more meaningful life. We seem to be living through some very interesting times, with so many people seeking answers to deeper questions about our collective existence and focusing on making our world a better place. more

Fangan
I realise that whilst the fanks make beautiful images, without explanatory words, the significance of their existence is not informed by the photographs themselves. more

Simple Things
Photography has never been a cerebral exercise for me. I’ve no great technical expertise. My processing is rudimentary at best. My photography is more to do with bringing a little peace to my soul. more
