My friend and partner in the Natural Landscape Photography Awards, Matt Payne, was in Scotland leading workshops over the last few weeks, and added a week to the end of his holiday to stay with us in Ballachulish. Fortunately, the weather played ball (mostly) and we had a great time sharing locations and adventures. It’s really enjoyable to show someone some of your favourite places and see what they make of them. One of the things that stood out to Matt - and a subject that Joe Cornish, Simon Baxter, and I discussed in a recently recorded podcast - is the massive variety of tree species and environments we have in the Highlands. Many countries have more spectacular trees (aspen in the US, snow gum in Australia, etc), but for sheer variety, the UK, and the Highlands in particular, delivers in spades.
One of the best walks was around a small woodland in Ardnamurchan, where we arrived just after torrential rainfall and, as the sun came out, the trees were illuminated. We were cackling like demons and wading through knee-deep bog to find some perfect viewpoints. Matt’s flying back to Colorado now, and I’m sure he’ll already be missing the black pudding and haggis breakfasts!

Navigating the Currents of Art and Science
More recently, some scientists are focusing on links between science and art. For example, natural scientists in the “SciArt” community are creating art using photographs of scientific processes and phenomena, with the goal of making science more interesting for the wider public. more
Natural Landscape Photography Awards 2025
Every year since year two, we have tried to include some ‘special awards’. There were created for a few different reasons. Primarily to ensure that certain classes of image that may be under or over represented in the main categories can have a focused outlet. E.g. in the first year we included Rocks & Geology, Trees & Forests, Snow & Ice, Mountains and Rivers & Seas. These just seemed to be some core subjects to include. We also an more
