Paul Kenny and Doug Chinnery

We’ve got a couple of books to review in this issue, both by Kozu and both authors have been featured in On Landscape. Paul Kenny's creations with saltwater, flotsam and jetsam are both fascinating and exquisitely crafted. Doug Chinnery has no secret of the fact that his photography has been influenced by Paul Kenny’s artworks (amongst others). more

“Shaped by the Sea” Book Review

The project can be summarised as covering the tidal zone of Europe’s Western coastline. Theo humbly says “It was never my intention to cover Europe’s entire Atlantic coast” as if this was perhaps a passing thought, discarded at the last minute. more

In the Dreamtime by Nicki Gwynn-Jones

Being as she has only lived on the island for a couple of years, she has produced some fantastic work and this particular book, printed on Orkney as well, focuses on the flowers and grasses on this windswept land. more

Island by Hans Strand

I know I’m a critical viewer though and a few people have been impressed with the publication when they’ve dropped by and if you’re a big Hans Strand fan (with equally big pockets and arms) then this is probably a must buy. more

Photographing Snowdonia Mountains by Nick Livesey

After an excellent start to the book showing the safety, accessibility and local knowledge aspects of walking in the mountains (i.e. Where to get a good breakfast!) the book’s core content is a series of high-level mountain walks, with viewpoints selected along the way. more

Behind the Photograph by Charlie Waite

If you’re an older photographer, you may remember the original ‘The Making of Landscape Photographs’ and ‘Seeing Landscapes’ books that Charlie produced in the 1990s and if you do then, like me, you would have enjoyed reading his descriptions of how he found and constructed the photographs therein. more

“North West” by Alex Nail

When I spoke to Alex Nail about his work a few years back, he kept saying “Oh I’ve kept a few photos back for the future” I hoped then that he might be planning a book. more

William Neill – Retrospective

William Neill is no stranger to On Landscape, most notably because he runs his own On Landscape column for Outdoor Photographer, but also as we’ve reviewed a few of his e-books previously. more

Sally Mann

I have now read her memoir, Hold Still, twice and am pretty sure I could re-read it several more times, never be bored and continue finding new depths and insights. more

The Landscape Photographer’s Guide to Photoshop – Book Review

The book really shouldn’t be called “A guide to Photoshop” as it’s really a guide to processing images that just happens to use Photoshop as an example. more

Masters of Landscape Photography – Book Review

One of the core concepts of the book is that each photographer therein represents a master of some arena of landscape photography. more

Photographing Scotland – Book Review

The book is actually pretty comprehensive when you’re looking at the classic icons of photography but it will never offer the sort of in-depth coverage that you might get in guides to other areas. more

Most of the classic locations in the Lakes are represented, and if James likes an area, you’ll get more photographs of it. more

The Photography of Peter Dombrovskis, Journey Into the Wild

I think it’s safe to say that the new Dombrovskis retrospective was one of my most anticipated books of recent years and sadly, upon having time to study the book at length, it’s also one of the most disappointing. This doesn’t mean that the book doesn’t have value and it is certainly the case that bringing a level of anticipation to any purchase enhances the sense of disappointment when things aren’t quite as expected. Let’s backtrack a little though. Peter more
